Backpacking And Hiking


With an area of 22,000 square miles, Algoma Country offers many hiking challenges for both novice and experienced backpackers. One can experience a serene walk through a groomed nature trail or rough it alone in some of the most magnificent and untouched areas in Northern Ontario. There are literally hundreds of hiking possibilities!
The Voyageur Trail
Hike 600 km (400 mi), of trails passing through some of the most spectacular and rugged areas in Ontario. When completed, this hiking trail will span the central part of Northern Ontario from Manitoulin Island to Sault Ste. Marie, along Lake Superior to Thunder Bay. The longest continuous stretch is approximately 300 km (200mi) from Sault Ste. Marie to Elliot Lake. Saulteaux (Sault Ste. The Chapleau Crown Game Preserve

Lake Superior Provincial Park
This is the largest provincial park in Algoma Country, offering a variety of trails for hiking enjoyment. Whether you backpack among cloud shrouded hills or along cobble beaches you can take one day or several days to enjoy this natural environment park. PH: (705) 856-2284
Mississagi Provincial Park
Mississagi Provincial Park is a hiker’s paradise, with numerous well-marked trails. Some are pleasant short walks through the forest, while others are more challenging hikes for experienced and energetic hikers. PH: (705) 848-2806 June - Sept. (705) 865-2021 Oct. - May
The Coastal Trail
Coastal Trail is the best in Algoma at 63 km (5-7 days). A strenuous hiking adventure, the trail traces the Lake Superior coastline along scenic cliffs, across cobblestone beaches and through bush. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, especially along the Sand and Agawa rivers. Several access points give you a choice of spending one or several days on the trail.
